UMEC SCREENWRITING: MEET STEPHEN GATES

Each week as we count down to the submission deadline, we are going to introduce you to one of the alums in the industry who has volunteered to read the winning scripts and provide their feedback. So without further ado, meet Stephen Gates:
Stephen Gates - Biography
Head of Literary Dept. Evolution Entertainment

Stephen Gates began his film career as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. Upon graduating he started his career in production as a Camera Trainee in New York City. He quickly became a 2nd assistant cameraman and a member of IATSE Local in New York. Stephen continued on to become a 1st assistant cameraman working on feature films, commercials and music videos.

Stephen continued his film education while attending NYU'S Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated in 1992 with his MFA. He decided to move to Los Angeles later that year.  Here in Los Angeles, Stephen started his representation career as an assistant to a motion picture literary agent at ICM. As part of a five-year career as an agent, Stephen worked at the Susan Smith Agency and Writers and Artists Agency.

Most recently Stephen has chosen to continue his representation

career as a manager. For the last eight years he has been a literary manager at Evolution Entertainment and as the head of the literary department for the last five years. During this time the literary department has grown and thrived in both television and feature films. The literary department consists of seven managers and represents a wide range of writers and directors including Darren Lynn Bousman ("Saw 2", "Saw 3"), Jake Wade Wall("When A Stranger Calls"), R. Scott Gemmill ("E.R."), David Ansapugh ("Rudy", "Hoosiers") and Andy Fickman ("Reefer Madness", "She's The Man")

Stephen has focused his attention representing English and Australian and Spanish speaking directors such as Bill Bennett ("Kiss or Kill"), Bill Eagles ("Beautiful Creatures"), Rob Bailey ("CSI-NY") and Rigoberto Costanedas ("KM 31"). Stephen has developed two feature films at the studios as well as the UPN television series "Love Inc." Stephen is currently developing the novel THE LONG RAIN with Bill Bennett to direct and Stephen Susco ("The Grudge") and THE ROAD with Jorge Saralegui.
