It's The '50s All Over Again or Is it?I've lamented in the past that DVDs, VOD, the video iPod and good old fashion piracy has taken the "Oh, I gotta see that" out of movies… and it's evidenced by the fact that box office has been steadily declining over the past two years – and the slide will continue, mark my words. Sure, you might say people are renting and buying DVDs more, but that's slowing down, too. However, the movie going experience can still "wow" you under the right circumstances and get you away from you TV and ripped DVDs.

UMEC Film Fest Takes Manhattan June 14th!
News - UMEC Film Festival

UMEC is pleased to announce the first-ever New York City screening of its annual Short Film Festival. The screening, which features all films selected for this year's film festival in Los Angeles, unspools on June 14th at the Bijou Digital Film Center. A reception will follow on-site at the Center.

If you're in New York on the 14th, don't miss this opportunity to see the latest work from Michigan filmmakers and hang out with your fellow alumni! UMEC members get in free!

2006 Film Festival Wrap Up
Programs - 2006 Film Festival

UMEC is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the 2006 UMEC Short Film Festival. We had a great turnout for both the film screenings and the networking luncheon with MPAA CEO Dan Glickman. The festival itself featured eight excellent films from Michigan filmmakers:

The Rebel Angel - (Frank Fitzpatrick • Writer/Director/Producer/Composer)
Dylan - (Brandon Hall • Writer/Director/Editor/Producer)
Sammy - (Melinda Steffen • Creator/Animator)
Actors - (Zach Evans • Producer)
The Adventure Golf Guy - (John C. Andrussi • Writer/Producer)
Where U At? - (Dominic Cianciolo • Director/Editor/Producer)
War Prayer - (Matthew Tailford • Actor/Producer)
Adios, Papita Fritas - (Mitchell Kiven • Editor)

Adios Papitas Fritas and Dylan were each awarded $1,250 in Fuji motion picture film for their accomplishments as the best alumni and student films of the evening.

2006 "Reel Wolverine" - Peter Benedek

PETER BENEDEK is one of the founders and senior partners of United Talent Agency, one of Hollywood's leading literary and talent agencies, representing such well known talents as Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford, Ben Stiller, Johnny Depp, Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, Dick Wolf, Tom Fontana, David Chase, M. Night Shyamalan, and the Coen Brothers.

Upon graduation from the University of Michigan and the London School of Economics, he entered the Columbia Law School, where he graduated with distinction in 1973. He then joined the Beverly Hills law firm of Kaplan, Livingston, Goodwin, Berkowitz & Selvin, where he was made a partner in 1979. He left that firm to help found Weissman, Wolff, Bergman, Coleman & Schulman in 1981. Then, in 1984, he left the practice of law to form the Bauer-Benedek Agency, which later merged with Leading Artists to become United Talent Agency in 1990.

His wife Barbara is a renowned screenwriter of such films as The Big Chill, Men Don't Leave and the remake of Sabrina. They have one son, Harry, age 18.

UTA is responsible for some of the industry's most critically acclaimed films such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, Magnolia, Fargo, L.A. Confidential, Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball, Crash, Being John Malkovich, and Boogie Nights, and television programs such as The Sopranos, Law & Order, Law & Order SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Oz, The Bernie Mac Show, The Drew Carey Show, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, Six Feet Under, My Name Is Earl, How I Met Your Mother, and Medium.
